If you’re in the mood for trying something new, check out Tableau. It’s set in an alternate-history version of the Victorian era—not steampunk, but circa-1880s society and technology with myths and legends come to life, secret societies, and all that good stuff.
It also has a bit of a Lovecraftian vibe, which I like. Or maybe that’s just where my own imagination went with it. The setting is evocative, not comprehensive; the specifics that are provided give you a good foothold in the setting, but also leave a lot of room to put your own twist on things. The game uses a d12 dice mechanic with a simple, robust rule framework.
One caveat: It’s a work in progress. Definitely playable as-is, but you may come across some situations that aren’t specifically provided for in the rules. If you’re the type that tends to tinker with things and make your own house rules, this probably won’t slow you down (heck, it might even be a bonus). And if you have any questions or want to let the developer know how your game went, you can find him on Twitter.
